The COS Football Giveaway - Bujumbura, Burundi

Last month, I met Brandon Thiessen on a group hike up to the breathtaking Nyiragongo volcano in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Beside being an amazing photographer, he currently plays an active role in developing The COS Football Giveaway project.
The COS Football Giveaway is a non-profit organization composed of a diverse team of sport enthusiasts. Started by Antonio Zivanovic, COSFG plans to deliver 3000 footballs/soccer balls to the most impoverished places on the planet each year. The organization is passionate about the benefits of sport and helping people. The members would like to extend their love for the game of football/soccer to children around the world.

Soccer is the most popular sport in the world, and Bujumbura, Burundi has the lowest GDP per capita in the world; financially speaking, Burundi is the poorest place on earth. The people of Burundi love football, but do not have the same privileges as many of us. In light of this fact, The COS Football Giveaway has decided that the heart of Africa, (Bujumbura, Burundi) is a great starting point to give out footballs at the end of August 2009. Following the inaugural Burundi mission, the team involved in The COS Football Giveaway will travel to a different geographical region each year to donate footballs/soccer balls to the most impoverished places on the planet. Check out the site and donate to this great project!

This past weekend, I went to visit Brandon in Burundi and he showed me "The Best of Bujumbura". I brought my last two Adidas-donated soccer balls for the giveaway along with some other books and supplies for him to distribute as he sees fit.
